Sunday 31st January - Kenya National museum

The things that are easy accessible are often saved for another day, and that day never seems to come. So Stepha and I had decided to make an effort to visit the museum here in Nairobi after have passed many times thinking ‘here I still have to go one day’. Eike, who arrived in Nairobi this weekend, joined us, eager to learn more about this place. The building and expositions are an interesting combination of old fashion collections, like the dead bird collection, its own history and history of humankind as well as humans and animals in Kenya. There are also temporary expositions, of which the one on biodiversity made by Biota caught much of our interest. Merijn had ran around the whole building at least 10 times while we made a single round, and was very happy with a milkshake and a coke at the Savannah restaurant. I am sorry to report that we agreed that the coffee was of lesser quality.
From there we took a closer look beautifully framed herbal garden. Stepha recognised several of the names from her study and was taking many pictures.
Then it was about time to head for one of Merijn’s favourite places in Nairobi, the UN recreation centre. The water in the pool has risen to 26°C on Thursday, so even for me swimming has become feasible. We were early enough to find a sun chair each. We celebrated Sunday with a Whitecap and another milkshake for Merijn.
