Monday 25th January 2010 Kazuri & Avatar

Another busy weekend is over. Saturday we went to Kazuri factory and Sunday we saw Avatar.
Saturday begun at ICRAF, all good scientist that want to please their boss meet up for a Personal evaluation on a Saturday, if it is requested :o) It suited me fine, and Merijn thought the time he could spent in Dofus was far too short. But we had an appointment with Stepha to visit the Kazuri factory. It is situated behind the Karen Blixen museum, and indicted with very clear signs from Langata road. They have several shops around Nairobi, but are also producing for export, and the Netherlands is one of their largest costumers. We received a guided tour which was very to the point, showing each part of the production process within 20 minutes, leaving us at the shop filled with necklaces, pottery and a few bags. I brought some necklaces for reparation. The trunk had broken from an elephant when it hit the flour. By a lady from the shop we were brought to the back of the beat colouring department where brought to a small elongated room with shelf upon shelf with jars filled with colourful handmade and painted beads. Looking something like I imagine the store room of the ‘big friendly giant’ and a candy shop, free for calories. The gentleman there found a jar with funny shapes in between which a few animals as funny striped zebras and a few elephants too. In general animals are hard to find at Kazuri, but we found what we were looking for. At the shop I found a matching bracelet, which will be the forth I own and one of the two I actually wear. On our way back to the North West of Nairobi we made a short stop at Ngong road to order some more wrought iron works, rose arches. Since I was not content with the price of the first shop, I had to explain it all over again to another. I hope I can pick it up by next weekend.
The weather is becoming warmer for every day, but at the UN recreation centre the water is still pretty chilly, Brrrr. We had to wait for some food the usual long time; the Savannah there has always been breaking records in that direction. We arrived at 15 asking for water and a menu, to be served just after 17. So do not go there if you are too hungry, although the standard is good. Merijn had a very good time splashing around while Stepha and I chatted on. Realising that I understand many of the guests around us, who were talking Norwegian, Dutch, Danish and French, other do not. I am not sure whether this is an advantage though.
Sunday I had to get some washing done, and Merijn checked out whether Thomas was home who lives 500m down our street. He was and both found it a very good idea to see the film Avatar, which is now playing around the globe. Since I read news seldom, and papers even less, I was not able to obtain the info on movie playing times using several different search-motors on internet. Thomas mother Ester did know So 14 we set out to walk to Westgate, our nearest cinema, to see the film starting at 1420. We bought some soda and popcorn and Merijn and I entered a Nairobi cinema for the first time. I am sorry to report that the 3D format is not available here, and this is the newest cinema in town. Otherwise it was a magnificent family film, although Merijn thought it was a little long in the middle. We were also subject to two blackouts, and in a cinema it becomes very black. Some are accustom to this and have their mobile phones ready to assure scared kids. After a minute maybe two the film starts rolling again and the voices and pictures come to speed again quickly. 1715 the film ended and everybody went out as they came in, which is very different from the cinemas I have visited so far. On our way home we bought some milk and yogurt and a pizza. Merijn’s favourite: with pineapple, which he carried home.
