27th October Feet and insects

Merijn had to prepare himself for school by himself today. I woke him 0645, just before I left for a field trip to Kiambere. There is a hydro power lake, and on the east bank one of my partners is doing a field trial with experiments that we have designed. Due to heavy rainfall, 65 mm in two hours, half of it is washed away and we had to obtain overview of the factual damage. I drove out to the field in the project Highlux with my two male companions, Jan and Ben. The place was very beautiful one week after the rains with all he perennials lush and green and the baobabs green and flowering. The company is called Better Globe and they are planting trees and Jatropha to prevent erosion, and experiment with dry land forestry to be able to help the people with sounds methods for growing valuable species. At this location there was planted Jatropha, Neem and a Mahogany species (Melia volkensii). We were shown all the different ongoing experiments and we could observe the process form processing Melia fruits into seeds until the planting in a new experiment, by smiling local women. On our way back we popped by the sale booth of Delmonte who have large pineapple field in Thika, here we were could by legally harvested pineapples for KES 6o each. I also received a phonecall from Juf Jojanneke, that Merijn was ill, he had been sting by a bee and his foot was swollen because of an allergical reaction. Of cause I consented in visiting a PG, who prescribed antihistamine. It was good that I already had arranged with Juf Els that Merijn could be home with them, in case I would be home late. So directly after I returned the car to ICRAF I went to pick up Merijn, who was playing Playstation with Kibett, with his foot on the table. On Wednesday Merijn was allowed to stay home and his foot was completely normal again on Friday morning.
