Friday 5th June No water in the rain

Once before we had no water left at our apartment. The tank in the garden was empty and our roof tank too. Now we are at the end of the rainy season, and it rains twice a week or more. With sunny days in between, so we are not at all complaining. For some reason in our part of the city the council has decided to close the tap to all residents for two weeks ago completely. So the people that are running out have to buy water of the blue water supplying tank lorries that are driving around everywhere in Nairobi and sometimes bring traffic to a halt because of problems with some hillside. All in all a bit fishy if you ask me, somebody closes taps so you are forced to buy the same from a service company, which probably costs a lot extra with extra traffic and pollution.
So this means I have to dedicate my lunch time to a shower at the UN Recreation centre. Because the water we just received from the water service company has stirred up all the dirt in the system, which does not look very compelling to shower in.
My landlord has informed me that there are plans to make a borehole to insure the local water supply. Water harvesting from roofs is not considered though, something still rare in Nairobi. Although some invest in a water harvesting system at home, especially people at new properties that do not expect that the Kenyan government will invest anything to take care of them.
In Norway my house Brohaugen is on top of a natural drink water reservoir, the pump house is my neighbour and the water quality fantastic, without filtering or so, what I do for all the water I use for drinking and cooking here. Also having a backup for drinking water, which I have in Nairobi, the thought never occurred to me at home.
At the other hand there is a yearround supply of watermelon, making up for some of the endurements. And for some even a source of creativity.
