Another weekend in almost over, just a few hours Sunday left. Last week Merijn has been on a school trip to Lake Naivasha and climbed the very much sleepy volcano Longonot (picture down)that rises 3000m above sea level. The lake is situated a few hours drive north of Nairobi. There they slept at place called fish Eagle Inn. They shared bedrooms with two others bringing their own sleeping bag and cloth for all kinds of weather. Merijn brought some carrot cake too. He was very much appalled by the fact that he was not allowed to bring his own knife. I guess that is one cultural difference between Netherland and Norway. According to Merijn climbing the mountain was very heavy, it took more than one hour. They had a lot of fun to doing games as Night watch where everybody has to make an animal sound. And they had also fun with sleeping together and making small parties in the rooms. The food was not so appreciated, eating cooked tomato and sweet pepper for dinner. It would be impossible to please 21 kids age between 7 and 12. According to Merijn they did not see a lot of animals, but they spotted some zebras in the distance. This is the story I’ve been told by Merijn so far. I was not joining them since I had to work 5 days in 3.
Those free days I found a small garden centre and cafe called River side cafe. Along all road sides one can buy plants, but often it difficult to find parking and if you drive by seeing something interesting, I am far too late to react if I see something interesting. But at the garden centre there is parking space and one can take its time from a rather well maintained and large assortment of plants. Here it is also possible t
o buy shading cloth, seeds and several types of special soil. Among it seed planting soil that is sterilised and clean. Tropical soils are rather aggressive to tiny seeds and seedlings full wit h fungi and bacteria. Although I have managed to grow some small tomatoes by now, they are still green. Slow germinating seeds will not easily make it into a healthy plant.
