Here big headline stories follow each other close. Even I fairly disconnected can not escape those things. Last Friday a grocery store in the centre of the city burned out. Fear of looting made the shop manager to lock all the doors. In the wide area none of water sources were working, so the fire brigade was there without being able to do anything much for the 30 people locked inside
The same weekend came a message that approximately 100 persons were killed by an exploding petrol truck. The truck had an accident and welted at the side of the road, where it leaked its content as a small river. People wanting to have some of the good started to fill anything they found although warned by police and found a horrible way to die. For both fatal exidents blood donations were requested form the ICRAF staff during this week.
And since yesterday there is no fuel for sale in the vicinity of Nairobi and this is expected to last for two weeks, although apparently some fuel is available here and there. So no risk that the streets will be empty any time soon.
What ever happens it is always a good idea to read local papers before travelling to a place as Nairobi. Some good links before travelling

Nederlandse ambassade in Nairobi http://kenia.nlambassade.org/
Here a form can be downloaded for a voluntary registration of Dutch citizens in Kenya.
Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi http://www.norway.or.ke/. Here can be read that can be found at the Lionplace, now I just have to find that place. All maps I have checked so far have not been able to help me. I have to find it because I have to apply for a renewal of our oppholdstillatelser.
At ICRAF we receive weekly security messages, which usually do not contain any uplifting information.
