Thursday 6 November Obama-day

Does the USA celebrate their new president? The Kenyan government has decided to give everybody a day of today, so the schools are closed. Yesterday there was a party at ICRAF and all staff was treated with drinks and food, hamburger, hotdog, popcorn besides Kenyan party food. There were some good and funny speeches full with hope for a better future, followed by music and dancing.
It is already almost two weeks ago we visited the Giraffe centre in Karen. Many of the guests that visit ICRAF invited to plant a tree. Miyuki is my partner in the biofuel project at ICRAF addressing social economic questions. Her father, in the capacity of director of JIRCAS (Japanese research funding council), visited ICRAF. He should of cause plant a biofuel tree, but so far there are not to many known. Jatropha does not grow well at 1700 m here in Nairobi. Therefore I found a Pongamia pinnata, that we were able to pick up Robert Anders nursery in Karen. This we decided to do at Saturday, using a project car. Katja, who I share offices with, was driving. Since we already where at the other site of the city we decided to use this opportunity to visit the Giraffe Centre. This is a very nice place and visitors friendly, once you have found it. There are many beautiful, gracious up to 7m high animals that comfortably can be fed on two different levels. They do not like to be touched, but accept that as well in small doses as long as there are feeding pellets available. No you do not need to bring bread or so. Merijn found those long black tongues a little unappealing, but he fed one of the largest giraffes by throwing pellets in its mouth. A tea-corner serves some drinks and a ice-cream and a very good assortment of souvenirs and handcraft items. It is quite close to the elephant orphanage, but if one has to make the very hard choice between the two I would go for the giraffes.
