6 September 2009 End of another weekend

Sunday evening 2200h; another weekend is ending, the other weekend of the other part of our stay here. It feels like we slided in our old rhythms without ever have been in the North. Friday afternoon I found myself waiting patiently what seems like forever for a parking spot at Village market cursing myself that this is not the place to be on Friday afternoons for doing the weekly main shopping. But when a very friendly Naumatt employee is pushing my trolley to the other end of the parking lot I feel a little privileged again. Saturday went by in a cloud of overfilled snotty head doing finding all kind of vegetables and fruits and some other things at the small shops in Spring Valley. I tried to wash some cloths, but this was made impossible by the lack of electricity. The water down is empty too; hope that the tank on the roof lasts the whole weekend. Merijn had one of his favourite friends over, Kibett, and together we went for a short swim and necessary hair wash at the UN recreation centre, where the guys had a strawberry milkshake, and I a cafe latte. I hope the new skin on my back appreciated some sun, since the terrible burn on the Dutch beach.
Sunday was mainly consisting in cooking and washing. Yes we had another power cut, but it lasted only less than 1,5 hours. So the sofa looks even worse than before, since the red soil evenly distributed by Merijn (and mine) dirty feet is only washed away in patches. I do hate cheap washing machines, beware before you buy LG. The final rinsing water I try to catch to water the totally dehydrated garden at my part of the compound, which seems to help very little. All seemed to go according to plan, until Katja called that they were coming a little early since they were done in the Nairobi National park. I had invited her, Reinard and the two PhD students from Sudan (Sven and Martin) to diner together with Miyuki. Not much later Katja called again, they had a small accident at a roundabout of the Way-yaki, and this person was claiming it was their fault. Their almost 20 year old Landrover (Lucy) did not have more than another scratch on the bumper, but the somewhat newer car of the car in front of them had more damage, so Katja called the diplomatic police and the rest of that case has to be sorted tomorrow. Since the Landrover is called Lucy, I have decided to call my car Endeavour ... in case you wonder... probably not.
Sven and Martin are currently staying at a spare room at Miyukis place without any cooking facilities, hopefully for a very short period because of visa problems, but this a completely different story. I had cooked a chicken stew with a lot of vegetables herbs and some wine accompanied with brown rice and for desert chocolate cake with fruit salad and Miyuki brought delicious ice-cream. With wine and other fruit juices this went down very easily and we had a lot of nice discussion. I had updated my Nordic music lists and some artist got some special attention with my mainly German visitors, as Turbonegro and Maria Solheim.
Yes, I did hear taxi drivers were killed on the radio. A maize shortage is exchanged for a sugar shortage. All shops have run out more than a week ago, since all factories nationwide have their yearly maintenance at the same time, as I understood. We use little sugar, but Katja has asked me bring some, so she can sweeten her tea.
The picture is of Merijn and my little nephew Yari, who are enjoying a very sweet slush in Heerhugowaard
