Sunday 14 December Returned from Mali

After almost 3 whole days of workshop in Bamako, the city at the Niger river, there was 1 ½ hour left to see more of the capital before I had to leave for the airport. So we walked 10 minutes down the street, together with Wouter (in the picture) from Belgium who had also attended the meeting. There he asked how far it was to the marked, according to the man it was here he asked how far it was to the marked, according to the man it was 40 minutes walk. So we decided to find the next place to have a drink, It was very warm and dusty and we had skipped tea to be able to finish early. Along the road was a little shop with two fridges full with cans also was there a table and three chairs next to a corner were two men lay on a mat. The owner was making tea, I think, mixing the content of a small pot with an almost equal amount of sugar by pouring it into the cups and back in the pot for ten times or so. It was a nice point to observe the people going by. Sitting there still in the shade was even very warm.
Back in the hotel I found the organization waiting for me to bring me to the airport, two hours before the plane was to leave. The person in front of me was denied boarding and was not very polite, and I had to wait as well. Some people that knew somebody in the office behind the in checking counter, or disappeared inside themselves were able to achieve a boarding pass, but me and about ten others were left behind to enter a hotel taxi to be booked on the next flight. There we were picked up at 08 for a flight to Abidjan, Ivory Coast from where a flight to Nairobi was to leave that evening. The day consisted of airplanes, confusing airports and waiting on provided for by KenyaAirways. That they overbook flights is considered a normal practice. And I was one of few who was not going to Nairobi for transfer to another destiny. Together with the only person that was not French speaking I had a long conversation (I know some more of SouthAfrica and gold mining), and together we found our way around Abidjan airport. If we had wanted we could have walked out the door without visa or regular control, but we found the local KQ manager who helped us on the Nairobi flight. Unluckily I ended up in a seat at the ille in front of the emergency exit, so I could neither lean into the window or put my seat down, as well as the showed the same film as on the way over. I finished my book within an hour, and had 6 more hours to go but reached Nairobi airport. There we had to walk several hundred meters passing a few airplanes to get into the terminal. Before the pass control were long queues as usual, but now I have an extended visa so I was not in the most time consuming one. My luggage I found very soon and by accident my regular taxi driver was there waiting for a customer that had not arrived and Sunday morning before 08 the city is almost empty for traffic. Merijn was still sleeping, and Katja was having her breakfast. They had a good time although communication had been little difficult. Merijn complimented Katjas cooking and we first have to finish ‘Charlie and the Chocolate factory’ in English before we can return to our previous book.
