Entering 2010 on the beach

The day before New Year’s Eve we drove from Nairobi via Mombasa to Diani, which I have driven before. I am very happy to tell that the road is in great condition compared to our previous experiences, there is only one diversion where a new bridge in under construction in the vicinity to the exit to Machakos. Entering Mombasa is still like entering the middle of a busy truck filled industrial area, but there is nothing else to do than just cue use patience. We got to the ferry in afternoon traffic, and had to wait for almost an hour to get over, where it was just as crazy and busy, but after that we found Galu beach estate 829 without any problem, where the beds were made ready, the fridge contained some basic supplies and Rafiki was waiting for us (Eiriks 'Jack Russel' dog). We filled it with our supplies of beer, juiced and other things we brought anticipating a warm week. The temperature measured by the car was all the time between 33 and 29, depending on the time of day, also at night. Merijn was off to the swimming pool the minute I found him his trousers, and soon all of us had tried the water, which was so warm it was hardly refreshing, but just as I like it best and I think that we all four agree.
Preparing for New Years Eve and the day after we did some shopping the following day, where we found Antonellos Italian restaurant where we ate a delicious ice-cream, one of the following evenings we had a very good diner there as well, both pizza and fried fish was very good. Eirik who is one of my best friends here in Kenya is living in the house behind us, had invited us to come to the new years eve party of one of his friends, a family of white Kenyans. Just before 8 we arrived armed with a bottle of Chardonnay, red bubbly and fresh potato salad. As the first guest entering we were introduced to the lady of the house. Soon after other guests of all ages arrived bringing their food and drinks. There was lots of grilled fish and meat besides a variety of potato salads and other salads. Time went quickly, although Merijn was very tired long before 12. So I found a place on the mats that were on the grass viewing the sea, chatting while Merijn could lay down. Just before 12 everybody walked up to the pearl white beach that was illuminating magically in the bright full moon. There after good English tradition we made a circle hand in hand with the other 50 guests singing that well known traditional song, of which I know the tune, but have no clue of the words. Then the hotels besides us started their fireworks and some of us also fired a rocket. Some had made a hot air balloon which was let up after some starting problems, while everybody was wishing everybody happy new year. Merijn was past long his bedtime, we went to our place after our new acquaintances. Others went on to the forty thieves where there was beach party going on the rest of the night. There were parties all over Diani. One of the other residents of Galu beach estate, Thomas, informed us that at 04 the road was still full with cues and traffic and he had to walk.
