9th October- Kitengela glass and the visitors have left

On Wednesday morning Thomas and Cindy arrived again in Nairobi after having taken the train from Mombasa. It leaves there at 19 and is supposed to arrive at 10, and only goes as a night train back and forth. They were travelling 1st class sharing a lugar together. The beds were good and dinner and breakfast severed at the restaurant carriage was reasonably good. They even arrived on time, last time I had friends using this way of travelling they arrived in the city at 16. This ment that I had to install them in my office because I had a meeting at 11. But ICRAF campus is very nice, and they had a few things to check out and in on the internet. We had some salad lunch together with some of my colleagues, where after we went home, where also Merijn already was. There we took it easy implying Thomas caught up with some sleep while seeing Wallace and Gromit DVD with Merijn.
Thursday morning I worked between Merijn went off to school until the holiday celebrators woke up. Via Java coffee at ABC-place we went on to Kitengela glass at the other side of the Nairobi National park. The last part of the ride was bumpy and dusty and I do recommend a 4WD, although some parts were having signs of improvements in close future. In the vicinity of the workshop we saw the sad fact of many dead cattle in the fields, eaten by the marabou in different stages.
The glass workshop and its surroundings are really standing out in the landscape, not just its round shaped glass hut, but also colourful sculptures and other artistic expressions. The other visitors at a Thursday afternoon were a school class and two muzungu women, besides us tree. People were working on making tiffany animals and mirror frames, solid glass tiles and there was a lot of activity in the glass hut itself. Everything could be seen and inspected almost without limitations and small paths were leading the way from one place to another indicated by colourful and glass tiles cemented into the stone. There was also a beat shop and a pottery, but both were un attended when we came in. In the glass shop we were informed that all glassware had 30 to 40% discount compared to the indicated shop prices. It will be difficult to buy handmade 100% recycled glass anywhere else. The whitest glass is still a little green and it is very clearly handmade, but this is Africa still, and it is a fresh breath compared to the complete Luminarc assortment that is for sale at every Nakumatt. Check it out yourself http://www.kitengela-glass.com/
Even Thomas and Cindy were tempted to buy two copper-sulphate turquoise curly stet wine glasses. And I bought some pale blue and green coloured glasses and a mug. Which all were packed very carefully packed to withstand the ride home again.
Afther a cuppa tea at home I made ‘andijviestampot’, mixed potato with bacon and fine cut salad, one of my Dutch specialities. The travellers were repacking everything strategically to be ready for the night flight back to Amsterdam. Mwenga, the taxi, picked them up at 1930, because the flight was to leave at 2210. Since Nairobi is a popular for both night and morning long haul flights many leave at in a short time frame making the airport flooded with travels twice a day. My experience so far that there will be a lot of waiting involved in the 5 different cues, excluding toilet or coffee.
By the way, the glasses are working the way they should, keeping the wine inside... cheers
