21th September Camping at Naivash

At the beginning of the new school year event some mothers found it a good idea to go camping together. Last weekend we had Monday off too, because of idd ul fitr, celebration of the end of ramadan. We decided to go to Camp Canellys at Naivasha. Marianne, mother of Sophie and Yve, asked if she could join in our car, since hers was in the garage. On Saturday morning we packed a little cautiously and everything fitted into our car. At the campsite we found some parents who already came before us. In total there were 8 mothers 3 fathers 19 kids and 2 teachers on internship. Not long after arrival we went swimming at Sopalodge. A fabulous but expensive resort, but just for swimming it is Ksh 300 for adults and Ksh 150 for kids, with the possibility for drinks at the pool site, shower and sauna. Back at the camp the last parents had arrived and kids were playing, some also ended up in the mud at the lake shore. The BBQ was prepared with inputs of everybody. There was more than enough for everybody. The campfire started with a lot of smoke, bud burned well eventually and some marshmallows were roasted. In a small tent that Judith provided us Merijn slept reasonably well and everybody prepared breakfast with tea, coffee and warm milk even slices of cake from dutch AH.
There after the group split in two. The people that were going home later that day went to Craterlake. We who were staying went for a boat trip and hippo safari. We divided into two boats for a total price of total Ksh5200 for 7 adults and 10 kids. We saw a lot of hippos but did not come too close. Some people were fishing swimming with a net between them. From a fisher we were able to buy a few fish that was thrown out and caught by fish eagles. This gives the best opportunity to see them up close in action. In the trees at our campsite there were Colobus monkeys and some very large owls. I had forgotten to bring my camera, so I could only take pictures with my mobile phone. Our small group went for another pool visit, we first tried the eldest lodge at Naivasha but their pool is currently under reconstruction, so we ended up at Sopalodge again. The dripping cloudy sky had turned into sunny blue again and we enjoyed a drink at the pool site where there were a lot of people today. That evening we had dinner at the camping cafe. The food was very good, although very slow. We had company of the camping warthog. He did get some leftovers of the kids, but after that he decided to join us on the cushions and get some more of our plates. He was scared off by the personnel. That evening we roasted a few more marshmallows on the campfire before hitting the sleeping bag.
For breakfast we ate all kinds of leftovers; pineapple, watermelon, pancakes, bread, speculaas, coffee, tea..... I had a lovely shower in the sunshine where hot water was available in large amounts. The sanitary facilities were simple but sufficient. The tents and everything else was packed and fitted back into the car. We went to Crater lake, there the kids jumped in the small swimming pool, which was ready although the surroundings were under construction. The teachers and I went for a stroll around the lake, where we were able to have a close view of both types of flamingo taking of off. We had some lunch at the lodge and while one parent was helping one to eat the other ended up in the mud of the lake. Merijn tried to help her out, but got even dirtier himself. Luckily he had both slippers and after washing he took another dive in the pool. He had to go into the car in underpants and a towel, his cloths were to dirty. Only our car went on to visit Judiths farm for a cup of tea. We brought back the tent too. We finished our complete round around the lake and arrived in Nairobi just before dark. Marianne received a message that nanny had dinner ready, and there was enough food for us too, with fantastic ice-cream for desert. At home we unloaded the car and rolled into bed, to be ready for a normal working day.
