Last week we were in Mwesambweni again. On Monday two weeks ago Merijns holiday began, and the around 15 we started to drive towards the Sikh temple (see picture) were a traveler can get food lovely Indian food and a place to overnight against a donation. A place of green tranquillity in the middle of dry Kenya. We arrived around 6 after the worst part of the road from Nairobi to Mombasa, with detours on dusty and stony paths over crowded with large trucks. The route is the main highway from Mombasa port via Nairobi to the Ugandan capital Kampala. And only a few hundred meter is 4 lanes of which most in Nairobi. The trucks have all kinds of standard, and are able to have all kinds of maximal speeds of 20 to more than 100 km/h. It happened more than once that when I decided to overtake a rather slow truck an other was coming from behind at a surprising speed, both times it had a Shell logo.
The day after we visited a field station at Kiboko. After that we moved to Mombasa, about 4 hours drive, but of general better standard than close to Nairobi. Along the road a few zebras were observed and some monkeys beside some unidentifiable creature flat on the tarmac. We listened to a cd book ‘de zeven sprong’ and Merijn slept half of the route. Close to Mombasa the roads became more jammed again. At the first roundabout we took the wrong out, and it took some time we managed to get back again out of the truck jammed roads. So we drove straight trhough Mombasa in where it had become about 1630. The car in font of us at one of the many round abouts crashed into the back lights of the one in front, making evering come to a halt. Then the police started to guide the traffic around and since we were first all roads from there to the Likoni ferry were virtually empty although many cars were waiting to get ove
r too. Here we found Eirik who had just been on a maximal shopping tour at the Nakumatt there. The ferry is exactly as one expects in an African country, and has the reputation for its unpleasant surprises although the few times I have used it was OK. It is a good thing we can swim and we have the windows maximally open. Did I mention there are sharks in this water? To Mwesamweni is about an hour south and from the main road it is 15 minutes drive on coral stone and bumpy track to the coastal villas as the one Eirik has rented.
